Thailand’s southern border provinces step up security measures for election period

NARATHIWAT, May 30 (TNA) - Authorities in Thailand’s southern border provinces have stepped up security measures as the upcoming general election on July 3 draws near.

Lieutenant Colonel Wiwat Hongbandansuk, commander of the 36th ad hoc unit of Narathiwat, said on Monday security measures in the violence-plagued southern border provinces have been intensified to guarantee order during the election period.

Wiwat also said he had instructed his subordinates to remain neutral politically. He noted that although his subordinates were duty-bound to secure the province, they would also have to cast their votes just like ordinary people.

The commander added that soldiers, police, administrative authorities and people’s networks had joined forces to secure areas in Sungai Kolok and Tak Bai districts under the jurisdiction of his unit.

He said they were also trying to prevent illegal immigrants from crossing the Kolok river in Tak Bai, Sungai Kolok and Waeng districts and smuggling illicit objects into the country. (TNA)
