Buoys floated to mark marine sanctuary in Thailand

TRANG, May 30 (TNA) - The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources with the people in Kantang district here have set buoys afloat in the sea to mark a marine sanctuary, aimed at reducing the losses of provincial marine resources.
Trang Governor Maitree Inthusut, along with some 100 department officials and the local people, set out 45 buoys off in Tambon Koh Libong locality on Sunday, to mark a sanctuary for dugongs, sea grasses and endangered sea animals such as sea turtles, dolphins and whale sharks, sending out a clear message against any illicit commercial activity.
The measure had been part of a local attempt to protect endangered marine species off Kantang district, while increasing local revenues by turning the area into a tourist attraction featuring abundant marine resources.
Similar sanctuaries would in future be marked in seas off at least 15 coastal villages in four other districts, namely Kan Tang, Palian, Si Kao and Hat Samran. (TNA)
