Over 1,5 tons of poached salmon seized in Kamchatka last weekend
PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, May 30 (Itar-Tass) -- Over 1,5 tonnes of
salmon were confiscated from the poachers in Kamchatka last weekend, the
press service of the Kamchatka territorial police department told
Itar-Tass on Monday.
A greater part of highly precious fish, which the poachers caught, was
being shipped to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky from those districts in the
territory, where an industrial fishing season of Pacific salmon began. The
poachers failed to produce any fishing license. The fish was passed for
official storage. The inquiries are being made in the poaching case.
From May 25 until October 1 the Kamchatka law enforcement agencies are
carrying out a special operation to avert poaching and illegal sale of
salmon and red caviar. Similar operations are held on the peninsula every
year.
In 2010, 174 poaching cases were found in the similar operation. Some
102 tonnes of salmon, more than 49 tonnes of red caviar, 78.6 tonnes of
crabs and 179.3 tonnes of bottom-living edible fish were confiscated from
the poachers. More than six kilometers of nets, 137 boats and 31 engines
for them were confiscated either, the press service reported.
