Thailand joins ASEAN in regional fight against pandemics

BANGKOK, May 28 (TNA) - Previous outbreaks of devastating pandemics, including SARS and H1N1, with serious public health and economic consequences, has prompted Thailand to join other member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to strengthen regional preparedness against the pandemics through collaborative programmes.

Thailand's Bureau of Epidemiology has acknowledged ASEAN countries' agreement on a new five-year pandemic preparedness plan based on multi-lateral collaboration, after the 17th ASEAN summit in 2010 collectively stressed the need to continue strengthening regional pandemic preparedness and response efforts, as called for in the blueprint of the ASEAN socio-cultural community to be formed within 2015.

Under the new plan, which entails the development of human resources through workshops, ASEAN will train epidemiologists and expand the reach of the surveillance and response teams--aimed to contain any pandemic outbreak and to establish an early warning system in the region. (TNA)
