Thai vegetable exports to Europe regain pace

BANGKOK, May 28 (TNA) - Thai Commerce Minister Pornthiva Nakasai confirmed this week that Thai vegetable exports to Europe have partially resumed, with Switzerland being the first to reopen its market for the Thai veggies, following fears of pest contamination.

Pornthiva said that the Thai exports, covering a portion of 16 kinds of fresh vegetables, including basil, thyme, coriander, caraway, eggplants and chilli, have already been allowed to be back into the Swiss market, where hygienic standards for food products have been placed on the world's top list, after Thailand has applied to a 100-per cent safety guarantee scheme.

Under the framework, Thai vegetable exporters are required to register their firms under the “Establishment List” of the Thai Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives’ Department of Agriculture for official inspections and guarantee of their products' safety, effective since March 14, 2011.

Pornthiva insisted that the partial success was a positive sign for Thai vegetable exporters to soon regain their access to the huge 27-member European Union (EU) market, as Thailand’s Permanent Ambassador to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva has been assigned to convince the EU on the Kingdom's newly-adopted high safety standards of veggie exports and to also coordinate with Thai commercial and agricultural offices overseas on the same progress.
