Thai PM campaigns for votes in Northeast

BANGKOK, May 28 (TNA) - Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva visited the country's northeastern region on Saturday to campaign for votes for his Democrat candidates in the lead-up to the forthcoming general election, set on July 3.
Accompanied by Thai caretaker minister attached to the prime minister's office Satit Wonghnongtaey, Abhisit, the Democrat Party leader, flew from Thailand's main Suvarnabhumi Airport early Saturday morning and was scheduled to launch electoral campaigns for his Democrat candidates in Ubon Ratchathani, Yasothon and Amnat Charoen Provinces.
Earlier, Abhisit said that Thailand would not allow a “fugitive living in exile” to determine the country’s future, in referring to ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra who remains behind-the-scene leader of the Pheu Thai Party, the Democrat Party's arch rival in the upcoming national poll.
Abhisit insisted that he decided to dissolve Thailand's House of Representatives to pave way for the new general election on July 3 when Thai voters will decide on the country’s future in a transparent way.
The Democrat caretaker premier's comments followed recent remarks aired by leading Pheu Thai figures that Thaksin will decide who will become the next Thai prime minister.
Meanwhile, Abhisit’s leading contender for the country’s top job in the July 3 general election, Yingluck Shinawatra of the Puea Thai Party, who is Thaksin's youngest sister, also campaigned for votes on Friday for Puea Thai candidates in the Northeast, where Thaksin has remained vastly popular, including Roi Et Province.
