Philippines offers to mediate Thai-Cambodian border rows

BANGKOK, May 28 (TNA) - The Philippines, as a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), has offered to play a mediator role to help resolve unsettled border issues between Thailand and Cambodia, also ASEAN member states.

Philippine President Benigno Aquino made the offer during his official two-day visit to Bangkok earlier this week, saying that, if needed, Manila is ready to send observers to help efforts to cool the border rows between the two neighbouring ASEAN countries.

A spate of border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia has centred on a small patch of land surrounding the 11th century Preah Vihear Temple on their shared border. The latest spate of their crossfire last month, which left 18 dead and displaced some 85,000 villagers in affected areas, dominated the annual ASEAN summit in Jakarta earlier this month.

Aquino, who arrived in Thailand Thursday afternoon, met members of the Filipino community in Bangkok before flying back to Manila on Friday. (TNA)
