Thai PM: Talks on Preah Vihear issues progress well

BANGKOK, May 28 (TNA) - Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has acknowledged that Thai-Cambodian talks on issues related to the ancient Preah Vihear Temple along the common border have progressed positively although there has been no conclusion yet.
Speaking of the informal Thai-Cambodian talks, held earlier this week ahead of the next World Heritage Committee meeting in Paris in mid 2011, Abhisit said that the talks were likely to bring positive results and Thailand was ready to explain its stance in any forum to create proper understanding.
The Thai caretaker premier confirmed that the World Heritage Committee had agreed to postpone its consideration on a management plan of the World Heritage-listed Preah Vihear Temple, proposed by Cambodia, as requested by Thailand pending an agreement on border demarcation between the two neighbouring countries.
Abhisit said that the next step is for concerned parties to discuss solutions to relevant problems, including a spate of border clashes which started in 2008, and that Thailand also has to prepare its defence for the International Court of Justice (ICJ), where Cambodia has filed its complaint.
The caretaker Thai prime minister noted that he was waiting for a report from Thai Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti, who headed a Thai delegation for the talks in Paris earlier this week. (TNA)
