Berezovsky's assets arrested in Switzerland, France - Russian PGO
MOSCOW, May 28 (Itar-Tass) -- At the request of the Russian
Prosecutor-General's Office the competent authorities of Switzerland and
France have arrested, respectively, about 21 million Swiss francs on the
bank accounts of the group companies Forus, related to Boris Berezovsky,
and two ocean yachts, worth about 20 million dollars belonging to the
businessman.
As the Prosecutor General's Office said on Friday, the Russian side
"is taking the necessary measures related to proving in the Court of
England and Wales its claim to Berezovsky and his accomplices more than
100 million dollars worth." The lawsuit was filed in April this year for
the air carrier Aeroflot over damages caused by fraudulent transactions
with the Swiss company Forus.
These results were achieved through more active international
cooperation by the Prosecutor General's Office and similar agencies in
other countries aimed at returning from abroad assets stolen from the
Russian owners. In particular, the PGO said, following the talks held in
May, the Federal Prosecutor's Office of Switzerland decided to transfer
more than 55.8 million dollars to the largest public shipping companies
Sovcomflot and Novoship in partial compensation for the damage caused by
theft of their property by former executives hiding in the UK.
"This transaction was conducted at the expense of the currency funds
stolen by the accused and blocked on their bank accounts in Switzerland in
January-February 2011, at the request of the Prosecutor-General's Office
of Russia," the PGO said. The Prosecutor General's Office in Switzerland
guaranteed that the money left on the bank accounts of the accused will
remain blocked under a civil claim in an amount of approximately 850
million. A similar lawsuit was previously filed at the Court of England
and Wales against individuals and legal persons responsible for damage to
Russian companies. So far Sovcomflot and Novoship have had about 86.5
million dollars reimbursed.
During the period from July 2010 to May 2011 the companies have
managed to achieve a real compensation of more than 400 million dollars.
"In order to protect Russian property interests the Prosecutor
General's Office of Russia intends to continue to closely interact with
foreign colleagues further on," the PGO said.
