Thailand's manufacturing production index drops in April

BANGKOK, May 28 (TNA) - The Office of Industrial Economics reported on Saturday that Thailand's manufacturing production index (MPI) dropped by 7.81 per cent last month due mainly to impacts from the earthquake and tsunami in Japan's Northeast on March 11.
The office's director-general, Suthinee Puphaka, acknowledged that the twin disasters in Japan have begun affecting the Thai MPI, as the index fell by 7.81 per cent year-on-year in April 2011 caused largely by a downturn in the local automobile industry.
According to the senior Thai Industry Ministry official, the country's automobile production rate and sales dropped by 27.8 per cent and 17.2 per cent respectively last month when compared with the same period last year, resulting from damages in Japan's auto industry.
The senior Thai official said that the country's food production and sales also dropped by 4.6 per cent and 6.6 per cent year-on-year respectively in April due to rising costs and a plunge in local production rates of frozen prawns in the wake of severe flooding in the Thai South recently, and that local production and sales of hard disk drives fell by 16.8 per cent and 13.3 per cent year-on-year as well, while the products are being replaced by newly developed solid state drives (SSD).
