Key Democrat figures help MP candidates campaign for votes

BANGKOK, May 27 (TNA) - Key figures of Thailand's ruling Democrat Party have continued with vote campaigns for their MP candidates, insisting that they are not worried over recent poll results showing the popularity of its arch-rival Pheu Thai Party has been growing.

Thai caretaker Abhisit Vejjajiva, who is the Democrat Party's leader, also helped his Democrat candidates campaign for votes in Bangkok's areas on Friday, saying that the poll results have not discouraged his party and he believes his party and the rival Pheu Thai Party have had close vote support in the capital.

Abhisit acknowledged that he had decided to return electoral power to people through the House dissolution; so the Thai voters could decide which party should have the chance to administer the nation, and that he has ordered police to watch out for possible violence in the run-up to the upcoming July 3 general election.

Abhisit said he believed that his party would win more than 160 seats in Thailand's Lower House, dismissing Newin Chidchop, Bhumjaithai Party key figure's comments that neither he or Yingluck Shinawatra, the No. 1 listed candidate of the Pheu Thai Party and the youngest sister of exiled ex-Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra, would become the next Thai premier despite winning a lion’s share of the Thai House seats after the forthcoming national poll.

Meanwhile, Thai caretaker deputy prime minister Suthep Thaugsuban, who is also the Democrat Party's secretary-general, said that the recent poll results prompted his party to take precautions, urging people to vote for his party if they want Abhisit to return to office. Suthep noted that he is confident that the July 3 general election will happen smoothly, as he has ordered security authorities to seriously round up illegal firearms and people who carry or possess them.

In Thailand's northern Chiang Mai Province, a political stronghold of the Pheu Thai Party, the Democrat Party's deputy leader Apirak Kosayodhin was there to launch electoral campaigns for Democrat candidates at local markets. (TNA)
