UNESCO backs postponement of Preah Vihear issue pending Thai-Cambodian border demarcation

BANGKOK, May 27 (TNA) - The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has supported a proposal from Thai negotiators to postpone considering the management of the Preah Vihear Temple agenda, raised by Cambodia, until Thailand and Cambodia settle their border demarcation.

UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova proposed to postpone the Preah Vihear agenda, which is in accordance with the Thai stance, saying that the UNESCO wants both countries to settle their border demarcation first, and that he has already informed Cambodia of the proposal; while the Cambodian delegation will give a response later on Friday.

The move followed a meeting between the Thai delegation, led by Thai Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti, and the UNESCO director-general in Paris to discuss ways to relieve Thai-Cambodian border rows.

Earlier there was a bilateral talk between the Thai and Cambodian delegations, but no agreement was reached; so, Thailand asked the UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee to adjourn its consideration of the World Heritage listed Preah Vihear management plan Cambodia had proposed to be put on the UN panel’s 35th meeting scheduled for June 19-29, 2011 claiming that the management plan violates Thailand's national sovereignty.

The UNESCO director-general then had his separate talks with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An and Cambodian Senior Minister Var Kim Hong, who supervise border affairs, and with the Thai delegation before the proposal was publicly announced. (TNA)
