Philippine President visits Thailand to boost bilateral relations

BANGKOK, May 27 (TNA) - Philippine President Benigno Aquino arrived in Bangkok, Thailand on Thursday afternoon for a two-day official visit aimed at boosting and strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

President Aquino then met Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva at Bangkok's Government House for talks on a wide range of topics. The two leaders discussed bilateral trade and investment, as well as their respective roles in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The two leaders also talked about bilateral cooperation against drug trafficking, agricultural support, regional and multilateral forums, and explored ways to further strengthen ties between the two nations.

They agreed to convene the first joint Thai-Philippine trade committee meeting, as well as to hold the 5th Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) in the Philippines in August following four years of its suspension, to expand opportunities in every dimension of bilateral cooperation.

President Aquino said Thailand is the ninth largest trading partner of Philippines and encouraged Thai business operators to further expand their investment in the Philippines.

The visit of the Philippines President, which will end later on Friday, appears to represent long-lasting and strong relations between the two ASEAN member states since they established diplomatic relations in 1949. (TNA)
