Dniester parliament sets two terms for president
TIRASPOL, May 27 (Itar-Tass) -- Parliament of the breakaway Dniester
region of Moldova on Thursday amended the Constitution by establishing a
government and limiting the president by two terms of office.
The president was given the right to dissolve parliament, while
lawmakers can vote no-confidence in the government.
The parliament will continue to have 43 seats.
Speaker Anatoly Kaminsky said the final approval of the amendments
scheduled for June will be purely technical. The amendments are likely to
come into force after the presidential election in December.
"The idea of instituting the government headed by the prime minister
has long won support in society therefore lawmakers did not debate it,"
Kaminsky said.
The Dniester region "needs an executive body that will constantly deal
with economy, financial system, and industrial issues in general," he
added.
Dniester leader Igor Smirnov, who has been in office for 20 years,
said lawmakers studied the legislative experience of many countries.
"Definitely the main emphasis was laid on harmonization with the Russian
Federation," he said.
