Thailand implementing "315 strategy" against drugs

BANGKOK, May 26 (TNA) - The Thai government has continued to implement its "315 strategy" against narcotics, particularly in five provinces surrounding Bangkok, which are dubbed "dark red zones" due to soaring drug addiction records.

Assistant National Police Chief Police Lieutenant General Vorapong Chiewpreecha held a meeting here on Thursday, joined by some 300 concerned authorities, including police, the military and administrative and health personnel.

Operational measures on preventing and cracking down on narcotics across the country under the "315 strategy" were discussed, focusing on the "dark red drug zones" that were home to immigrant workers from drug-prone neighbouring countries.

Under the "315 strategy", the assistant national police chief said, urgent operational measures will be implemented in the provinces of Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Prakan and Samut Sakhon. The programme would aim to treat some 10,000 drug addicts to fully recover over the next five months in the areas, from April 1-September 30, 2011, to return them to the society with normal livelihoods.
