Thai Airways to establish low-cost airline

BANGKOK, May 26 (TNA) - Thai Airways International (THAI) has announced plans to set up a low-cost airline to boost services for all customers.

THAI President Piyasvasti Amranand made the announcement on Thursday, after securing the green light for expansion plans from the THAI board.

Mr Piyasvasit said THAI would continue to serve high-end passengers, but its new budget airline would handle middle market customers, while the joint THAI-Tiger Airways handle low-end passengers.

He added THAI would procure 11 new planes for its low-cost airline. They would be part of THAI’s procurement of 75 new planes in the next 12 years.

The THAI president declined to comment however, over impacts the July 3 election could have on the expansion, insisting he would wait for the election results.

Meanwhile, Mr Piyasvasit reportedly led a seminar with THAI commercial executives from worldwide branches. They discussed service improvement and marketing plans to cope with fiercer competition among airlines.

THAI reported it would have twenty-six of the 75 new airplanes over the next three years. The carrier also said it planned to raise the proportion of its online ticket sales from 3% to 10% of total ticket sales this year. (TNA)
