Thai exporters backed to expand market share in Japan

BANGKOK, May 26 (TNA) - The National Food Institute (NFI) organised a seminar titled "Thai Food Industry: Safety and Trust for Competitiveness" in Bangkok on Thursday, as part of its support for the Thai government's initiative to promote and develop Thailand as a "kitchen of the world", and for Thai food exporters to expand their market share in Japan under the Japan-Thailand Economic Partnership Agreement (JTEPA) framework in the long run.
NFI President Petch Shinabutr said that the seminar was mainly aimed at providing proper knowledge and understanding for Thai food entrepreneurs who were targeting the Japanese consumer market. The session covered quality and safety (or "Anzen" in the Japanese language) of imported food products, as well as relevant laws and regulations imposed by the Japanese government.
The NFI chief noted that once Thai food firms secure business trust or "Anshin" among the consumers in Japan, Thailand's largest market of food products currently, they would be able to help increase the country's overall market share of food products in Japan.
According to the NFI chief, Thai food exports to Japan, namely fish and processed chicken and pork, usually accounted for 14-15 per cent of the country's total annual Thai food exports, worth over 113 billion baht on average.
Japan was known as the world's third largest food and farm produce importer after the United States and Germany, with imported food products accounting for up to 60 per cent of all food products available. Thailand's market share of food products in Japan had stood at around 6 per cent, worth some 3.7 billion US dollars annually, and ranked fifth among global food exporters to Japan.
Meanwhile, Malee Choklamlert, Deputy Director-General of the Thai Ministry of Commerce's Department of Export Promotion, acknowledged that Thai food exports to the world market have been rising, reaching 5.04 billion US dollars or 151.29 billion baht, the first four months of this year alone, demonstrating a 20.7 per cent year-on-year surge. Major Thai food exports to global markets include rice, processed chicken, frozen shrimps, canned tuna and fresh and processed fruits and vegetables. (TNA)
