Neither “Abhisit” nor “Yingluck” will be next Thai PM: Newin

BANGKOK, May 26 (TNA) - Key political figures have criticized Bhumjaithai Party de facto leader “Newin Chidchob” on his prediction that neither Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva nor Pheu Thai’s No 1 candidate Yingluck Shinawatra will be prime minister after Thailand’s July 3 election.

Deputy Prime Minister and Democrat secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban retorted Mr Newin’s remark, asking if he was a fortuneteller. In response to Mr Newin’s call for Mr Abhisit to resign as the Democrat leader if the party was defeated in the election, Mr Suthep said it rested with party members and was not the business of Mr Newin.

“As the leader of candidates in the election, he will normally consider his position if the party loses. But this will not be pre-discussed,” Mr Suthep said referring to Mr Abhisit.

Suthep said he was confident the Democrat Party would win the election because it had protected the nation, and was not worried about a libel lawsuit filed by red shirt protest leaders against him.

Meanwhile, Miss Yingluck and her party members campaigned at markets across Khon Kaen province for votes. In response to Mr Newin’s prediction that neither she nor Mr Abhisit would be the next prime minister, Miss Yingluck said the decision rested with the voters.

Asked if she needed better security for her vote campaigns, Miss Yingluck said police had to prevent violence and all parties should help ensure peace and constructive atmosphere in the election.

Separately, Pheu Thai’s list candidate Sanoh Thienthong criticized Mr Newin’s remark to be undemocratic. He said if the Pheu Thai Party had an overwhelming number of votes, it would form the next government and then, Miss Yingluck would certainly become the prime minister.

Mr Sanoh also asked the military to be politically neutral and adhere to their duties. (TNA)
