Hashimi asserts that the new Iraq model cannot complete without a free and responsible press

Baghdad (NINA) - Vice President Tariq Al Hashimi said the new Iraqi model will not be complete with its actual sense without a free and responsible press, courageous in the expression of the conscience of the citizen and his suffering, a matter which we feel today in the Iraqi press.

Hashimi said, during his visit today to the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate and his meeting with chairman of the Syndicate, Muayad Al Lami, and a large crowd of journalists, that “building a model of the new Iraq requires a free and responsible press that writes to address the imbalance, not for the sanctification of the officials, and this is what we aim at developing and consolidating in the paths of journalistic work, which was marked over the past few years with courage in unveiling the malfunctioning sites and ways of treatment.

Hashimi expressed full support for the journalists protection draft law and promised that he would convey the perspective of the journalists for the Parliament Speaker during the coming days in order to enact the law, and that he will remain supportive of the journalists’ causes.

For his part, Lami confirmed that the Iraqi journalists were, during past few years, keen on national unity, peace, and sacrificed more than 360 martyrs in order to consolidate freedom, democracy and building Iraq.

Lami expressed regret "for not getting any privileges for journalists despite the sacrifices they made and that some officials believe that the legislation of a law to protect journalists may not be possible, as they believe that the Iraqi citizens also need protection. Such officials could not realize that the journalist goes to all sensitive and dangerous areas without any kind protection.”
