Silverchair 'going into hibernation'

SYDNEY (AAP) - May 25 - Australian rock band Silverchair is going into "indefinite hibernation".
A letter on the band's website revealed the decision, which comes after they played several shows last year and were working on a new album.
"However, over the months that followed in the studio it became clear to us that we were moving in different directions," the statement says.
"Despite our best efforts over the last year or so, it's become increasingly clear that the spark simply isn't there between the three of us at the moment."
Silverchair formed in Newcastle, NSW, in 1992.
Their debut album Frogstomp was released in 1995, when they were all still in high school. It reached No. 1 on the Australian charts, as did all four of their subsequent albums, and they received a record 21 ARIAs for their work.
The last album, 2007's Young Modern, was a critical success that didn't translate into album sales despite reaching the top of the charts.
In their statement, the band says they stand by the same rule they had when they formed 20 years ago: "If the band stops being fun and if it's no longer fulfilling creatively, then we need to stop."
They say each of the band "still truly care about each other ... (Ben Gillies) is busy in the studio recording his own music, Chris (Joannou) is working on various business, musical and charitable ventures, while Daniel (Johns) is creating a film soundtrack and working on other musical projects."
Silverchair thanked their fans for all their support.
