Thai Election commissioner warns candidates and political parties to abide by the law

BANGKOK, May 25 (TNA) – Election commissioner Prapun Naigowit, announced that people can register for advanced voting with district offices from June 13 to 17 and the advanced voting date is set as June 26. He is satisfied with the smooth registration of constituency candidates and also warns candidates, supporters and political parties not to violate election law.

Mr Prapun, at the Office of the Election Commission, said that eligible voters who could not cast their vote on the July 3 election date could seek permission for advanced voting through three channels. They can seek the permission by themselves, authorize other persons to seek the permission on their behalf or send their request by registered mail. Those who will cast their votes in advance in their own constituencies must register for the advanced voting with their district offices on June 13 to 17. They must also present documents to prove that they cannot cast their votes on July 3. However, if they are unable to exercise their right on the advanced voting date, they can still cast their votes on July 3.

The people who will cast their votes outside of their native provinces or have moved from their native areas for less than 90 days can register for advanced voting with the district offices in which they are living. The registration is set from May 25 until June 2. If they fail to register, they must cast their votes in their native areas.

Those who registered for voting outside their native areas in 2007 do not have to register for the right again. But if they change their workplaces or return to their native areas, they must register again with the offices of the districts where they work.

Those who want to cast their votes overseas must register with their embassies or consulates, which will set an advanced election date from June 12 onwards. Eligible voters will be able to cast their votes en masse, to do so they must have their offices send their names to the concerned district offices.

Mr Prapun said he was satisfied with the registration of constituency candidates, which happened smoothly nationwide on its first day. Although some political parties have not registered their candidates in all constituencies, they still have four more days left for registration. (TNA)
