MP warns of agreements between blocs to reshape IHEC on partisan basis

Baghdad (NINA) - MP from Taghier (Change) slate, Lateef Mustafa, called for "distancing the Independent High Electoral Commission away from partisan quotas."

He expressed his concerns "of agreements between the blocs of State of Law Coalition, the Iraqiya Slate, and the Kurdish Alliance to reform the Board of Commissioners on partisan quota basis."

He said, in a statement to NINA on Tuesday "IHEC is one of the independent bodies legislated in the Iraqi constitution, but what we're seeing on the ground is the opposite."

He added "the first Board of Commissioners’ members, which supervised the referendum on the constitution in October 17, 2005 and elections conducted in December 15, 2005, can only be described as independent, but, after that; the partisan and quota intervention were evident on members of the Board."

He continued "when members of the first Board of Commissioners retired in 2007, the current members were appointed on the partisan quotas basis; each powerful party at that time, selected a member of the Board of Commissioners on the basis of partisan affiliation."

"Today, we hear the news of agreements between members of SLC, IS, and KA to exclude existing members and restructure the Board of Commissioners on partisan quota basis. The Taghier Slate stands against the partisan quotas,” he made clear.
