Candidates can seek police protection: Royal Thai Police Office

BANGKOK, May 24 (TNA) - The Royal Thai Police Office has invited political candidates in Thailand to seek police protection in the run-up to the July 3rd election, in expectation of fierce competition and violence.
Senior police adviser, Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen, who attended Tuesday’s meeting of the election security center under the Royal Thai Police Office, said that police have been collecting intelligence from each constituency well ahead before the election.
Gen Pongsapat added police would offer protection to candidates in constituencies where there was possible violence against candidates, political canvassers and local politicians.
Any candidate concerned about their safety can now seek police protection, he said, noting they would be treated with political neutrality.
The report noted candidates in Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Ratchasima, and the three southern border provinces, have so far sought police protection. (TNA)
