Thailand needs at least 10,000 more doctors: Health Ministry

BANGKOK, May 24 (TNA) - The Ministry of Public Health reported on Tuesday that there are 13,083 doctors in the public sector in Thailand, but at least 9,772 more doctors are needed, particularly for the three southern border provinces.
Dr Suphan Srithamma, the ministry spokesman, said that according to a public health personnel masterplan, Thailand needed a total of 40,620 doctors this year, but the Public Health Ministry would require 22,855 of those. At this stage, the average ratio of doctors to patients stands at 1:7,000.
Dr Suphan noted the ministry had allocated doctors through a geographic information system, while considering the number of people per community. He added doctors repaying government-sponsored scholarships have the right to choose their work location, which would be completed in three years.
The spokesman said all doctor graduates must work at provincial hospitals for nine months after their graduation, and a further two years and three months at community-based hospitals.
Furthermore, the Thai health official revealed that about 1,522 doctors, who received scholarships, worked for the Public Health Ministry this year.
So far, at least three doctors have been allocated for each community-based hospital in Thailand, while other areas have about 85% of their demands fulfilled. (TNA)
