Appeal court upholds jail verdict against leading ex-Thai banker

BANGKOK, May 24 (TNA) - Thailand's Appeal Court ruled on Tuesday to uphold the Lower Court's imprisonment verdict against Krirkkiart Chaleejan, a former president of the now defunct Bangkok Bank of Commerce (BBC) and his associate, Pornjan Jantarakhajorn, who were both found guilty on charges of colluded embezzlement and abuse of power.

Based on the Thai Criminal Appellate Court's ruling, Krirkkiart and Pornjan's jail terms were maintained at 20 years and 12 years and six months respectively.

However, the Bangkok's Appeal Court reduced a fine Krirkkiart needs to pay to 128 million baht, from 211 million baht earlier ordered by the Lower Court, but increased a fine obliged by Pornjan to 120 million baht, from 1.33 million baht.

The former Thai banking executive and his associate were found guilty of colluding to embezzle more than 100 million baht from BBC clients' deposit accounts into their own pockets and approved loans for the bank's clients at inflated amounts. (TNA)
