Bomb kills two in Thai south

NARATHIWAT, May 24 (TNA) - A convoy of police vehicles was hit by a bomb blast on Tuesday in Tak Bai, Narathiwat, killing two police officers and wounding another in the southern Thai province.

The radio-detonated bomb exploded at about 9am on a road to Hat Sadet beach in Ban Taba village when four police vehicles, with one carrying Tak Bai police chief Pol Col Nitinai Langyanai, were passing through while en route to Ban Koh Yao village.

The explosion almost completely destroyed the second vehicle in the convoy. Three policemen on board were thrown outside the vehicle.

Two police corporals, Suwit Khongsri, and Ubonwan Jindaphet, a female officer, were killed instantly. Another female officer, Police Lance Corporal Wipawan Khongsud, was severely injured and was rushed to Tak Bai Hospital.

Authorities have so far linked the incident to insurgency, which continue to plague southern Thai border provinces with violent attacks.

From the latest reports, the first day registration of constituency-based candidates in Narathiwat had not been affected by the incident.

Security teams comprising police, soldiers and defence volunteers, have reportedly fortified protection at the registration site at the provincial hall, which saw the arrival of parties dominating House seats in Tak Bai, namely Chart Thai Pattana, Pracha Dharma, Matubhum, Bhumjaithai, Pheu Thai and Democrat.
