Abhisit asks EC to stop red shirts from disrupting his election campaign

BANGKOK, May 24 (TNA) - Caretaker Prime Minister and Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva has asked the Election Commission of Thailand (EC) to stop red shirt protesters from disrupting his election campaign trips.

Mr Abhisit said the actions of the supporters of the red-clad United Democratic Front Against Dictatorship (UDD) contradicted the EC’s reconciliation movement. He anonymously added that a political party was not promoting democracy and constructive politics, by having its supporters illegitimately accuse rival parties.

Mr Abhisit noted the red shirt leaders often asserted protesters who disrupted campaign trips were fake red shirts. Recent arrests, he said, have proven the claim as elusive from being true.

The Democrat Party leader went on to criticize the Pheu Thai Party’s policies, in particular their move to secure an amnesty for banned politicians, including the former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The Democrat leader insisted the focus should now be on solving social problems, which may otherwise stall Thai politics. (TNA)
