Large sums of cash go missing during electoral campaigning period
BANGKOK, May 24 (TNA) - The Bank of Thailand (BOT) reported on Tuesday that massive amounts of cash have been missing from formal circulations during ongoing electoral campaigns nationwide, feared to have been used for either vote buying or drug trade.
Sorasit Suntornket, BOT Assistant Governor for Financial Institutions Supervision, confirmed that tens of thousands of cash have disappeared from the country's formal financial system.
Sorasit, who is now in the northern Thai Chiang Mai Province, acknowledged that the massive amounts of money have been withdrawn in almost all regions of the country but it had not been circulated in the formal system, and that concerned officials of the Thai central bank were finding out where the money had disappeared.
The BOT assistant chief said, however, that the missing money was feared to have been spent on illegal activities, namely drug trade or vote buying during the electoral campaigning period in the run-up to Thailand's new general election on July 3. (TNA)
