PM urges peace loving nations to help resolve Kashmir issue
Islamabad, May 23, 2011 (PPI):Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has urged peace-loving nations to come forward to help resolve Kashmir issue that has jeopardized the peace and security of the entire world.
The Prime Minister was speaking at the inauguration of international conference on Kashmir in Emerging Global Perspectives organized by University of AJK on Monday. The moot is being attended by veteran academicians, intelligentsia, political analysts and leaders.
Kashmir issue has very badly affected the overall socio-economic development of both India and Pakistan besides adding miseries in the lives of the people of Jammu & Kashmiri the Prime Minister emphasised.
He said people of the Sub-continent have suffered a lot, particularly the people of Jammu & Kashmir as they have been deprived of their basic human rights including internationally promised inalienable, unfettered and unconditional right to self-determination.
The Prime Minister said Kashmiris around the world are clamouring for justice and sacrificing their lives for their legitimate and basic right of self-determination promised to them by the international community through UN resolutions.
Yet, he said, they are being subjected to, on a daily basis, mental and physical torture. A peace-loving community with unbelievably eye-catching and resourceful
land and unlimited economic potential has, unfortunately, been deprived of their basic human right, he observed.
He said it is now widely recognized that Kashmir holds the key to restoring the peace and socio-economic development in the region.
Unless this chronic issue is fairly resolved, the dream of attaining regional harmony, security and peace cannot come true.
Gilani said Pakistan will continue its principled, political and diplomatic support to the people of Kashmir for their inalienable right of self-determination as per resolutions of the United Nation.
We aspire long lasting security and peace in the region, good relations with all neighbouring countries including India. It needs not to mention that we Muslims being followers of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) believe in coexistence and good relations with our neighbours which is a part of our religious faith, he said.
He said it is encouraging that the dialogue process between India and Pakistan has been restored. It should continue so that the long standing issue could be resolved corresponding to the aspirations of the people of Jammu & Kashmir as well as the UN Charter and UN Resolutions.
There is no precedent in the modern world’s history that
any issue between two disputing nations was resolved through wars or
by maintaining the status quo.
Gilani said in an environment of peaceful coexistence, people of the both nations would be able to divert their energies towards far reaching socio-economic initiatives aimed at their well- being, progress and prosperity.
He said the University has provided a forum for purely academic deliberations on the issue in its real legal, politico-historic, socio-cultural and humanitarian perspectives.
It will suggests measures for its possible and lasting solutions as per the aspirations of the Kashmiri people so that both neighbouring countries may live
with peace and harmony.
He was certain that the outcome of this conference would be significant and would greatly contribute towards understanding of the issue and offer some viable proposals that can go a long way in seeking judicious resolution of this long-standing issue which, in fact, is the unfinished agenda of the UN Security Council and partition plan of the Sub-Continent.
The Prime Minister congratulated the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Habib-ur-Rehman for organizing this conference. He also thanked the international delegates for coming to attend this conference. He said their response to a rather short call indicates their profound interest in Kashmir issue.
Meanwhile, The Prime Minister also inaugurated 25 middle schools and performed ground breaking ceremony of Azad Jammu & Kashmir University Rawalakot Campus and Azad Jammu & Kashmir University of Muzaffarabad Campus, funded by Saudi Fund for Development.
Speaking on the occasion, Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said these projects will benefit entire population of Azad Jammu & Kashmir for generations to come.
He said Pakistan is highly obliged to the Government and the people of Saudi Arabia for this special valuable gift and many other similar gifts for the 2005 earthquake affected people of Azad Jammu & Kashmir & Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He said over six hundred thousand (600,000) houses have been reconstructed and all the earthquake affectees have been provided seismically safe accommodation. Disaster Risk Management Programme has been completed in all the nine districts.
He said programme for medical rehabilitation of over forty thousand (40,000) persons with disabilities has been completed and institutional arrangements have been put in place to look after these people.
Over four thousand Water and Sanitation schemes have been completed. With electricity and telecommunication fully restored, over forty new bridges constructed and most of the major roads having been repaired, normalcy has been restored.
Gilani said on the whole six thousand eight hundred and forty eight infrastructure projects have been completed while four thousand one hundred are under construction while some two thousand are being processed.
The Prime Minister said while a lot has been done, yet lot more needs to be done. He said he was fully aware of the need to complete the remaining projects, most of which are schools and must be completed at priority.
He assured that despite severe financial crunch and other challenges, his government is fully committed to complete the remaining projects on a fast track basis.
He appreciated that ERRA has been the first government organization to be ISO 9001 certified. On 12th May 2011, ERRA has been given 'UN Sasakawa Award 2011'.
He said in recognition of its remarkable performance and the need for a countrywide reconstruction and rehabilitation organization, the Government of Pakistan has made ERRA a permanent organization to be renamed as National Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority.
It will be responsible for reconstruction and rehabilitation phase for
any future calamities. He said as always the Saudis have always been in the forefront to help Pakistan in difficult times.
