Democrat Party introduces 33 candidates for Bangkok

BANGKOK, May 23 (TNA) - The Democrat Party has introduced its 33 candidates for Bangkok and its policies to campaign for voters’ support in the capital.

On Monday, caretaker prime minister and Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva introduced Democrat candidates for 33 constituencies of Bangkok. Almost half of them are new faces to politics including a number of TV program hosts and children of celebrities. He also announced policies in an attempt to woo support from eligible voters in Bangkok.

The event was also attended by Democrat secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban, deputy Democrat leaders Korn Chatikavanij and Apirak Kosayodhin and Democrat key figure Khunying Kalaya Sophonpanich.

Mr Abhisit said that the Democrat Party had a long-standing bond with Bangkok and that local people always trusted it. He noted his party was fielding 12 new faces in this election and had clear policies for the capital including those on the cost of living, traffic, crime and narcotics.

Mr Abhisit said he was not worried about the opinion surveys which showed that the archrival Pheu Thai Party was gaining popularity. He said that all polls taken so far had revealed that their respective levels of popularity were similar. He said he believed the election result in Bangkok would decide the victory in the upcoming election and that people in Bangkok would choose the parties to be the government.

Mr Korn said that Bangkok candidates had to follow all of their party's policies and promote reconciliation. He explained that Bangkok was the center of political struggle because protests had repeatedly occurred, such as those at the Democracy Monument, Ratchaprasong Intersection and Suvarnabhumi Airport. He insisted that his party supported reconciliation.

The finance minister added that he disagreed with attempts to grant an amnesty to an unnamed 'someone'. Mr Korn was apparently referring to former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra as the Pheu Thai Party planned to give him an amnesty if it rose to power. (TNA)
