“Yingluck” avoids commenting on her prime minister candidacy

BANGKOK, May 23 (TNA) - The Pheu Thai Party’s No 1 party-list MP candidate Yingluck Shinawatra admitted on Monday she was a proxy of exiled ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, but refused to say if she would be the party’s prime minister candidate.

Yingluck said she was unaware of reports that her elder brother Thaksin claimed it to be unnecessary for the No 1 candidate to be the prime minister. She said that people would elect the party that they wanted to form the government and the selection of the prime minister would then rest with that party or coalition government. She claimed for now, she only wanted to work for the public and said she would wait for the result of the July 3 election.

Asked if her Pheu Thai Party has a different direction from Thaksin’s by presenting her as the next prime minister, Yingluck said that would depend on whether the Pheu Thai Party would have a chance to lead the next government. If the party won with a majority of House seats, it should have the right to nominate the next prime minister.

Asked whether she was ready to be the next prime minister if the Pheu Thai Party does gain the majority of House seats, Miss Yingluck said that that would depend on the decision of people. Asked about the possibility of military being dissatisfied with her as the prime minister and staging a coup, Miss Yingluck said nobody wanted another coup because Thailand was already badly damaged. She called instead, for a fair election and the acceptance of its results.

Asked if the military would intervene in the forming of the next government, Yingluck declined to comment and said that she was duty-bound to comply with democratic rules and run in the election.

In response to Thaksin’s remark that she was his proxy, Yingluck said that she was his proxy only when it came to ideologies. She said she learned and understood his thoughts, visions, business administration and political work.

Asked if a proxy like her can accept what Thaksin has experienced, Miss Yingluck said “By being a proxy of someone, understanding of their thoughts comes naturally. Above all, the party has mechanisms in place headed by an executive board to make decisions.” (TNA)
