BANGKOK, May 23 (TNA) - Ahead of World No Tobacco Day on May 31, the Thai Ministry of Public Health has launched an anti-smoking campaign, targeting children and women, which they say have become the target groups of cigarette companies.
Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanavisit told a press conference that for the Day, the World Health Organization was promoting the protection of legal rights toward tobacco-free societies, and has called for law enforcement and awareness campaigns, focusing on people’s rights to protection from cigarette smoke.
Smoking was known to raise the risks of lung cancer, Ischemic heart disease, premature aging and delayed conception among women by three times.
According to the Disease Control Department, more teenagers aged 15 are becoming smokers. To this end, the Public Health Ministry has planned to reduce the proportion of teenage smokers to 10%, and cut the number of smoked cigarettes by 20% by 2014.
On May 31, Her Royal Highness Princess Soamsawali will open an event to mark World No Tobacco Day at the Siam Paragon shopping center in Bangkok. An awards ceremony will also be held to recognize contributions from individuals and organizations in controlling tobacco consumption. (TNA)
