Authorities beef up protection for political candidates in Thai south

BANGKOK, May 23 (TNA) - Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, who is also secretary-general of the Democrat Party, has ordered extra protection for people and political candidates in Thailand’s southern region, as the July 3 election draws near.

Suthep, who oversees national security, said he had instructed the 4th Army Commander to implement stern security measures at all southern border provinces due to recent abnormal situations. He confirmed security authorities will impartially give protection to all eligible political candidates, including those from the Pheu Thai Party.

Suthep insisted Pheu Thai can go ahead with its voter campaign in the South, saying the southern people were open-minded.

Meanwhile, the Democrat secretary-general said he was not worried that a recent survey showed the Pheu Thai Party, especially with its No. 1 party-list candidate “Yingluck Shinawatra”, was more popular than the Democrat party. (TNA)
