Thailand observes Int'l Year of Forests

BANGKOK, May 23 (TNA) - Thailand has supported a global target on reducing deforestation by at least 50 per cent by 2020.

The target was announced on Monday at a workshop held in Bangkok by the Thai Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment's Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning-- as part of Thailand's observation of the International Year of Forests and the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB).

According to UN statistics, the world has lost a total forest area of some 350 kilometres a day although 12 per cent of global forest areas have been listed as protected zones for biological diversity.

The United Nations has proclaimed 2011 the International Year of Forests and every May 22 the International Day for Biological Diversity. (TNA)
