Thai political parties intensify election campaigns

BANGKOK, May 22 (TNA) - Thai political parties on Sunday continued conducting political campaigns across the country.

In Bangkok, key figures of the Pheu Thai Party campaigned for votes at the Hua Lamphong railway terminus. They announced their plan to improve railway services and introduce a flat train service charge of 20 baht.

Chuwit Kamolvisit, leader of the Rak Thailand Party, conducted his party campaign at the Airport Rail Link station in Makkasan area. He said the link project was plagued with corruption and denounced the politicians who were allegedly involved.

Meanwhile, Bhumjaithai Party spokesman Supachai Jaisamut said his party received a warm welcome from the grass roots as its party list candidates included people from poor families. The party will launch its first public campaign gathering in Lam Takhong area of Nakhon Ratchasima province on Friday May 27.

Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva campaigned for votes in Wattana and Klong Toey districts. He said there were both supporters and opponents of his party but the party would continue to work for the public interest and solve conflicts through legal means. Today, Abhisit also opened a seminar for potential Democrat constituency candidates at Miracle Grand Hotel, which were attended by many Democrat key figures.

Among them, Democrat secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban said his party was not worried about the rising popularity of Yingluck Shinawatra, the number one list candidate of the Pheu Thai Party. He is confident that Abhisit is better than Yingluck and he does not think coalition parties will turn to support the Pheu Thai Party.

Fierce competition is looming in Buri Ram province as Khajornthon Judto who will run for the Pheu Thai Party in Constituency 8 told the press that black-clad men traveled on a pick-up truck to find and threaten political canvassers of his party. He already complained with the Election Commission and police. (TNA)
