Security operations intensified in Thailand’s far south to prepare for the election

BANGKOK, May 22 (TNA) - Over 400 soldiers conducted searches for illegal weapons in southern Thai border provinces to secure the upcoming election.
In Narathiwat province, over 400 soldiers and paramilitary rangers searched target locations along a section of over 100 kilometers long Thai-Malaysian border in districts of Waeng , Sungai Kolok and Tak Bai. The searched targets were 40 oil and cargo warehouses. The authorities seized over 52,000 liters of smuggled oil, five pick-up trucks modified to carry oil, smuggled goods and three guns of an influential person who narrowly escaped.
In Surat Thani province, local election authorities met district chiefs and heads of local police stations to discuss the election law. The province has budgetary problems for organizing the election but local authorities are still confident they can hold smooth election there. The election authorities told local officials to be neutral and warn candidates and their supporters not to violate the election law. They will also conduct intelligence in the areas of fierce competition. (TNA)
