Thai policeman was arrested while smuggling alien workers on a police vehicle
BANGKOK, May 22 (TNA) - A policeman of Tak province was arrested while carrying illegal immigrants into Thailand on a police vehicle.
Police Sergeant Wirat Leelasawat of a local police station in Tak was arrested by soldiers and border patrol police of a checkpoint in Ban Huay Hin Fon village in Tak province’s Mae Sot district while smuggling illegal immigrants on Mae Sot-Tak road Saturday night. The officer was transporting six Burmese men and four Burmese women aged 17-20 and 34,200 baht in cash was found in the glove compartment of the government vehicle.
Police Sergeant Wirat confessed to the human-trafficking. He said he had already sent 71 illegal immigrants at the immigration checkpoint of Tak in Mae Sot district and was then hired by traffickers to send the 10 immigrants deeper in the province.
Checkpoint officers in Mae Sot said corrupt officers turned to use government vehicles to traffic illegal immigrants; therefore, they must search all vehicles passing their checkpoints. (TNA)
