Thai export value expected to grow by 15% in 2011

BANGKOK, May 21 (TNA) - Thai Commerce Minister Porntiva Nakasai has said the total value of Thai exports in April this year amounted to 17.5 billion US dollars, a 25 per cent increase from last year, driven by the growth in the agricultural and industrial sector.
For example, she said, rubber exports increased by 105 per cent, and rice exports by 45 per cent. However, auto parts exports decreased by 5 per cent.
Porntiva said Thailand's total export value during the first four months of this year amounted to 74.5 billion US dollars, a 27 per cent increase from the same period last year. Exports to Japan increased by 33 per cent, but exports to Australia decreased by 36 per cent.
Meanwhile, the total Thai import value in April this year amounted to 18 billion US dollars, a 28 per cent increase from last year. Raw material imports increased by 22 per cent, while fuel products went up by 49 per cent.
The total import value in the first four months of this year amounted to 72.5 billion dollars, an increase of 28 per cent from the same period of last year.
Overall, Thailand had a trade deficit of 796 million dollars in April, but had a trade surplus of 1.9 billion dollars during the first four months of this year.
The Commerce Ministry said it has changed its estimation of the total Thai export value in 2011 to 12-15 per cent, from 12 per cent. However, a number of factors must still be monitored closely including the price of oil, the price of foods and consumer products, the exchange rate, the interest rate, and the recovery of the Japanese economy following the twin disasters.
