Thai officials laying out appeal to delay Cambodia’s Preah Vihear management plan

BANGKOK, May 21 (TNA) - Thai officials representing in the UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee are laying out Thailand’s appeal to delay Cambodia’s management plan for the Preah Vihear Temple, citing the unresolved border dispute near the ancient ruin.

Head of Thailand’s negotiation team Suwit Khunkitti called the meeting with officials from the Foreign Ministry, the Culture Ministry, the Armed Forces and other related agencies ahead of the meeting in Paris on May 25.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Thailand has requested a bilateral talk with Cambodia, whose unilateral request for Preah Vihear’s inscription of World Heritage site was approved in 2008. It has sought to solve the overlapping border claims between the countries before Cambodia goes ahead with its Preah Vihear management plan, which is the next step of the temple’s inscription.

Suwit said if his team failed to convince Cambodia to accept the proposal, Thailand would seek the support from other countries in the Committee, to withdraw the management plan from the agenda.

Suwit noted Thailand would raise the fact that the Preah Vihear issue has caused armed conflicts and complicate peaceful solution to Thai-Cambodian border disputes. (TNA)
