Thai exports likely to grow at least 12% this year

BANGKOK, May 19 (TNA) - Thailand's Department of Export Promotion said on Thursday that the country's exports are likely to grow at least 12 per cent year-on-year this year and should, probably, expand by up to 15 per cent year-on-year.
Nantawan Sakuntanak, the department's director general, acknowledged if Thailand's export growth rate stood around 12 per cent in 2011, the country's total export value should reach 120 billion US dollars.
Nantawan said that her department is exploring additional approaches to try to shore up the country's export growth rate in 2011 to the higher 15-per cent-target, including a plan to organise a regional food fair, dubbed the “THAIFEX 2011 – World of Food Asia”, in Bangkok from May 25-20--when there will be a mass meeting of global commercial envoys and food entrepreneurs for food businesses.
The senior Thai official noted that her department will also soon launch a new electronic trading system, through the [www.thaitrade.com] website, on which local firms can operate their business transactions with their international counterparts.
According to the senior Thai Commerce Ministry official, her Department of Export Promotion will supervise the new online trading system, in which at least 3,000 local businesses are expected to be then subscribers, to guarantee that only all quality goods and services, probably over 60,000 items, are exchanged.
