Japan hands prototype biodiesel plant to Thailand

BANGKOK, May 19 (TNA) - The Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research has been presented with a high quality biodiesel plant from Japan, which will prototype biodiesel production for local operators here.

Science and Technology Minister Virachai Virameteekul chaired a ceremony on Thursday for the handover of the plant from the Japanese government, deemed a gift from a joint study held on innovative biomass fuel production by the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology and Waseda University of Japan.

The prototype facility can generate biodiesel using biomass in edible plants, such as purging nuts, straw and crushed sugarcane, and is capable of processing biodiesel at international standards. The biodiesel plant will be located at the Technopolis in Pathum Thani province, and has the capacity to produce 1,000 liters of biodiesel per day.

Meanwhile, the Thai minister said he hoped the facility will help in the expansion of biodiesel production in the country, which currently uses some 55 million liters of diesel per day. (TNA)
