Party-list registrations commence in Thailand

BANGKOK, May 19 (TNA) - The first day of Thailand’s candidacy registrations in the party-list system commenced on Thursday, drawing eligible candidates from at least 26 political parties, contending in the next general election, set for July 3.
The Pheu Thai Party, which is backed by exiled ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra, drew the No 1 slot, while its arch-rival, the Democrat Party, got No 10.
Political candidates reportedly arrived before 8.30am at the Thai-Japanese Youth Centre in Bangkok’s Din Daeng area, the location where registrations are taking place, amid crowds of reporters and tightened security.
Candidacy numbers were assigned from a lot drawing, with the New Politics Party getting No 20; the Social Action Party No 14; Matubhum Party No 26; Rak Thailand Party No 5; Bhumjai Thai Party No 16; Chart Thai Pattana Party No 21; Rak Santi Party No 12; Thai Citizen Party No 4; and Chart Pattana Pheua Phaendin No 2.
