BANGKOK, May 19 (TNA) - The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) reported on Thursday that the Kingdom's automobile sales have continued to expand, boosted by a recovering Thai economy, rising confidence among local consumers and growing demand for new models of sedans, including those optimised for energy efficiency.

Supharat Sirisuwannangkura, chief of the FTI's automobile industrial club, said that domestic car sales totalled 305,902 units in the first four months of this year, marking a 36.6 per cent jump from the corresponding period of last year; while those of motorbikes reached 671,204 units, displaying a 11.69 per cent year-on-year increase.

Supharat acknowledged that domestic auto sales last month alone stood at 67,283 units, which was a 17.8 per cent rise compared with the same period of last year, but that the figure had dropped by 27.66 per cent from March 2011, with those of motorcycles reaching 150,213 units, making a 11.67 year-on-year increase.

According to the FTI, Thailand's automobile production tally totalled 558,160 units in the period January-April 2011, which was 14.39 per cent higher than the corresponding period of last year. However, the total vehicle production in the country last month alone, which reached 89,179 units, was some 15.16 per cent lower year-on-year and 48.15 per cent lower than March 2011.

The FTI said, however, Thailand's auto manufacturing for exports in the first four months of this year reached 278,986 units, representing some 50 per cent of the country's total vehicle production for the January-April period but only about 1 per cent higher than the corresponding period in 2010, and that the country's vehicle production for exports last month alone stood at 43,423 units, accounting for 47.57 per cent of the Kingdom's total auto production but some 27.89 year-on-year drop.
