Japan extends GSP for over 100 items of Thai exports

BANGKOK, May 18 (TNA) - Over 100 items of Thai exports have been approved with trade privileges under Japan's generalised system of preference (GSP) for a further 10 years, until March 31, 2021.

Surasak Riangkrua, Deputy Director General of the Thai Ministry of Commerce's Department of Foreign Trade, confirmed on Wednesday the extended GSP granted by the Japanese government to developing economies, including Thailand, since 1971, covered the 102 items of Thai exports.

Surasak said that Tokyo has also maintained its criteria under the GSP programme, including rules on the countries of origin and categories of products endorsed for the lowest, or even exempt, import tariffs in Japan.

According to the senior official, Thailand's exports of the 102 items of the privileged goods to Japan reached 108.11 million US dollars last year, a 18.59 per cent year-on-year increase, and stood at 5.85 million US dollars during the first two months of this year.

The senior Thai Commerce Ministry official acknowledged that Bangkok is also seeking Tokyo's approval of transferring the 102 items of Thai exports under the Japanese GSP programme to the framework of the Japan-Thailand Economic Partnership Agreement (JTEPA) instead; so, Thai exporters will secure the lowest-level import tariffs in the long run.
