Bangkok police on high alert in run-up to elections

BANGKOK, May 18 (TNA) - Bangkok police are monitoring movements in six constituencies expected to see fierce competition among Lower House candidates. Furthermore, 400 police officers will be deployed to ensure order at the venue for candidate applications on Thursday.

Bangkok police spokesman Pol Maj Gen Piya Uthayo said that 300 riot police and 100 traffic police of the Bangkok Police Division 1 will be deployed at the Bangkok Youth Center in Din Daeng district.

On top of this, the national police chief has ordered police nationwide to take care of campaign posters and offices of political parties, while instructing Bangkok police to review their lists of known gunmen and prevent the trafficking of weapons.

In a related development, police are examining a rocket-propelled grenade that was found in the Phadung Krungkasem canal in Bangkok earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, Army commander-in-chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha has ordered the Army to block the trafficking of weapons across the border to prevent their use in the lead-up to the July 3 election. He also urged people to help by keeping a close eye out for such activities.

Regarding the red shirt protest on Thursday, the Army chief asked demonstrators to stick to the law and refrain from offending other people or the royal institution. (TNA)
