Thailand marks 19th anniversary of May 1992 bloodshed

BANGKOK, May 18 (TNA) - Relatives of pro-democracy heroes and other well-known Thais gathered Santiporn public park on Wednesday to reminisce those killed in pro-democracy demonstrations in May 1992.
The construction of a memorial for their honour was expected to be completed next year in the park, to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the crackdown, alongside with the search for missing demonstrators as per the demands of relatives.
The uprising against the government of General Sujinda Kraprayoon was cracked down on by soldiers, killing 44 people and caused 31 others to go missing.
Parinya Thewanaruemitkul, executive member of the Pruesapa Prachatham Foundation which established in honor of May 1992 heroes, said that although it had been 19 years since the crackdown, relatives of the missing persons continue to demand for action to be taken to search for the missing demonstrators. He noted there had not been any progress because no one had taken up the mission.
Mr Parinya said that on Wednesday relatives of the May heroes placed the heroes’ belongings in 75 urns which were later placed in the foundation of the memorial. He said that memories of the May 1992 bloodshed should urge Thai people to try to prevent such an incident from recurring. He then admitted that the construction of the memorial had been delayed due design issues.
Meanwhile, Gothom Arya, chair of the Pruesapa Prachatham Foundation, along with relatives of May 1992 heroes attended the event, during which they placed garlands to reminisce the dead. Religious representatives also prayed for blessings and there was a lunch-giving ceremony to Buddhist monks. (TNA)
