Thailand's auto sales hit historic high for period January-April 2011

BANGKOK, May 18 (TNA) - Automobile sales in Thailand hit the highest level of all time during the first four months of this year, thanks to the steadily recovering Thai economy with growing domestic investment and production, as well as the expansion of Thai exports and demand for new models of vehicles with more favourable auto leasing deals.
Withikorn Suriyachantananont, assistant senior president of Japan-based Toyota Motor Thailand Co., Ltd., gave the update on Wednesday, acknowledging that the Kingdom's total automobile sale during the January-April 2011 period reached 305,902 units, a 36.6 surge from the corresponding period of last year, with the total sale of sedans alone soaring by 48.2 per cent year-on-year followed by 28.4 per cent of commercial vehicles.
Withikorn said that auto sales on the domestic market last month alone totaled 67,283 units, hitting a new highest monthly record displaying an increase 17.8 per cent compared with the same month last year, with sales of sedans growing the most followed by commercial vehicles, such as pick-up trucks.
However, according to the Toyota assistant senior president, auto sales in Thailand are anticipated to drop this month due to reduced production capacity of Japan-based automobile manufacturers in the wake of the country's March 11 disaster, bringing down the auto stocks of local dealers' firms. Japanese cars have secured up to 85 per cent of the market share of Thailand's overall automobile market so far.
The Toyota assistant senior president also said that the House dissolution in Thailand earlier this month should help stimulate the Thai economy in the run-up to the country's new general election, set for July 3, as all political parties will, be spending money on electoral campaigns across the country, triggering growth in the overall domestic consumption.
