EC warns party-list candidates against violation of election rules

BANGKOK, May 18 (TNA) - The Election Commission of Thailand (EC) has warned political candidates and their cheer troupes against violating the election law during party-list registrations that will start on Thursday.

EC secretary-general Suthipol Thaweechaiyagarn led on Wednesday an inspection at the Thai-Japanese youth sports centre in Din Daeng, Bangkok, which will serve as the venue for the registration.

Suthipol said arms-detection facilities and service centers for candidates, political party leaders and their supporters had been installed at the venue entrances. He added so far there had not been any complaint of electoral fraud, but said he expected them after the registration of party-lists and constituency candidates.

Meanwhile, Pol Maj Gen Suthep Romyanont, head of the EC’s Bangkok branch, said he has imposed security measures with the help of Bangkok police chief Pol Lt Gen Jaktip Chaijinda to ensure order during the registration as well as the upcoming election. He said the EC was not worried about the situation and urged all candidate supporters to comply with the law.

The chief of the EC’s Bangkok branch further explained that the EC expected particularly fierce competition in Bangkok during this election, and that it was monitoring movements in all 33 constituencies in the capital. (TNA)
