“Yingluck” to launch first electoral campaigns in Thai North

BANGKOK, May 18 (TNA) - “Yingluck Shinawatra”, the youngest sister of exiled ex-Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra who is now in the running to be Thailand's first female prime minister under the Puea Thai Party in the upcoming general election, announced on Wednesday that she will first launch her electoral campaigns in Northern Thailand.
Forty-three-year-old Yingluck said that Thailand's northern Chiang Mai Province, her hometown, and adjacent Chiang Rai Province, will be her first electoral bases from May 21 when she will present her proposed policies to local voters, aiming to counter criticism made by the Democrat Party of caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, regarding personal issues of hers.
The No.1 Puea Thai candidate acknowledged that the selection of other Pueu Thai party-list candidates will prioritise people who have worked with the party before, prior to considering each individual's competency, and that the selection was set to be finalised by Wednesday after a list drawn up in a Puea Thai Party meeting has been considered by Puea Thai executives.
According to the leading Thai businesswoman-turned politician, the Puea Thai party-list candidates will not, however, be forwarded to Thaksin for final review and resolution, as the ousted Thai premier will only participate in tailoring the Puea Thai Party’s policies.
Yingluck, who is some three years younger than Abhisit and is considered a naive politician, said that she has no plans at this time to engage in an electoral debate with Abhisit, but she will, instead, meet local people for her party's electoral campaigns and consider the Democrat Party's challenge when having some spare time before the July 3 new national poll.
Recent reports also suggest that Yingluck is scheduled to chair a meeting of the Puea Thai Party's economic team later on Wednesday. (TNA)
