Terror attack marks first school day in Thailand’s far South
YALA, May 18 (TNA) - The first day of the new school term in Thailand’s far South was marked with a terror attack as a hand grenade was hurled at a military vehicle. It missed the target but injured villagers and students.
The attack took place at the entrance of Siroros 3 road in the central municipality of Yala province Wednesday morning while a vehicle from the Internal Security Operations Command's southern outpost was passing by. There were two attackers and they were dressed in school uniform to look like students. One of them wore a necktie and a black crash helmet while the other had curly hair. They arrived on a motorcycle, from which one of them threw an M67 grenade at the military vehicle. The grenade hit the windshield, fell on the road and exploded, injuring six villagers and two students who were then rushed to the Yala provincial hospital.
Authorities found the grenade pin and amid shrapnel that spread across the area. They suspect the attackers are insurgents wanting to cause unrest on the first day of the new academic term and are examining pictures from surveillance cameras to identify them.
In Narathiwat province, meanwhile, police, soldiers and administrative officers are manning all 347 primary schools with checkpoints on main and minor roads, checking all suspicious vehicles in line with teacher protection measures put in place to increase teachers’ confidence.
Likewise, soldiers, police, volunteers and village guards in Pattani province protected students and teachers on their way to school from 7am. (TNA)
